Anectodical evidence suggests that dipping seedlings in a Phosphorous fertilizer solution before planting will give the seedlings a competitive edge during the growing season. Since Phosphorous is associated with root development and growth, we are anticipating that a Phosphorous solution dip prior to planting will result in a favourable outcome (i.e., enhanced root mass, greater growth, and increased resilience). In early June of 2021, the CTCNS Research Team planted out 100 seedlings as part of the Phosphorous Seedling Dip Trials. Prior to planting, each seedling was assessed for parameters of mass, health, height, root length, number of roots, and root mass. Then, seedlings were treated with a phosphorous solution (either 0, 1, 2, 5, or 8 g of Phosphorous fertilizer per litre of water) for a given period of time (either 0, 5. 15, 30, or 60 minutes). Seedlings are being monitored over the summer and will be dug up in the fall of 2021 for assessment of root development.
